Brief guide to the cip washing process

In the past, the machinery cleaning process was extremely complicated. Pipes and components had to be disassembled and washed by hand, a demanding activity which, despite the amount of time involved, was not an absolute guarantee of quality sanitation. With the advent of technology, the process has become increasingly automated, moving today from COP (Cleaning-Out-Place) to the more advanced CIP (Cleaning-In-Place).

The CIP allows you to forget all the cumbersome commands of the previous models, requiring only the preparation of the plant to be cleaned by means of a spray ball, realized with a practical hydraulic connection between the CIP system and the system to be washed.

All Prismatech systems are designed for washing with CIP.

Our CIPs are suitable for washing both Prismatech machinery and existing machinery, including fillers.

The consolidated experience developed by Prismatech in this field has driven us to draw up the following brief guide based on the common question:

How to choose the CIP configuration that best suits the needs of the product?

The answer to this question is not simple and depends on several factors:

1) Automation level

The CIP washing process can be automatic, semi-automatic or manual.

The most recommended, thanks to its many advantages, is undoubtedly the automatic system.

As the name suggests, the washing operations of this CIP take place completely automatically by means of pneumatic valves controlled by the control panel with PLC.

The washing data is detected by a series of extremely accurate instruments including: a flow meter, a conductivity-meter and a series of sensors.

The dosage of the cleaning products and the entire washing cycle are carried out automatically based on the required cleaning methods.

The control panel can save up to 99 different washing cycles called “recipes”.

The Prismatech Cleaning-In-Place system also boasts additional options.

In addition to monitoring product concentrations, washing times and temperatures, they have password settings that guarantee safe cleaning and a complete washing cycle without the risk of interruptions for a higher level of security during the process.

If the customer needs to wash several lines at the same time, our CIPs are always custom designed and can be configured to wash multiple lines at once.

2) Machinery and volumes to be cleaned

It is essential to evaluate the distances between the plants, the volumes of the tanks of the plants to be washed and the production speed. In this way, the tanks, pumps, pipe diameters and all components will be sized according to the flow rate and volumes necessary to ensure effective sanitation.

With a Prismatech process line, our specialized technicians will take care of the CIP design and tailor it to the needs of your facility.

3)Use of cleaning products

Water can be used either hot or cold, caustic soda removes odours and colours, acid prevents the formation of mould, and disinfectant, in particular peracetic acid, sterilizes.

For plants that produce fruit juices or carbonated soft drinks, a typical CIP wash could consist of a water cycle, a caustic soda cycle (diluted and heated to 85 ° C) and a rinse cycle with clean water.

Milk or dairy product manufacturers may consider a diluted acid cycle in addition to the caustic soda cycle.

For periodic washing by soaking or to maintain sterilization, it is possible to do a disinfectant (peracetic acid) wash which will be dosed in-line.

For water producers, a CIP with hot water and disinfectant may be sufficient.

CIP systems can also be used by producers of animal feed, dyes, perfumes and any situation in which there could be product contamination or variation of its characteristics. Based on the type of washing chosen by the customer, the CIP will be designed with the number of sections necessary for the preparation of the various agents and with adequate and chemical resistant materials necessary to treat it.

4) Required Efficiency

10-20% of companies’ production costs are now invested in the industrial washing phase and is a figure destined to increase. Offering an efficient and thorough sanitation service is the purpose of the CIP cleaning processes.

Prismatech is attentive not only to costs but also to sustainability. Our CIPs are fully customizable to optimize heat losses and save used water, thus minimizing discharges into the environment.

The tanks can be insulated to maintain their temperature, upon request a tank can be added to recover the rinsing water, and a pH control and modification system can neutralize wastewater to comply with local regulations.

5) Type of heating available

A hot wash is always recommended for at least one of the cycles and it is therefore necessary to heat the solution.
There are two ways to carry out this operation: with steam or with electric resistance heating elements. The steam group is recommended for large factories, which already have steam available. For zones without steam it is more practical to install heating elements.

Cleaning-In-Place is essential to guarantee a quality finished product and clean and sanitized machinery.

A process with a thousand variations which with Prismatech’s technical consultancy will be able to bring out the best, adapting perfectly to your factory and ensuring quality maintenance.
